However, you need to be aware that there are two distinctly different models of Royal Enfield Bullet – those Classic models with the original engine and four speed gearbox with right foot change, and the new lean-burn engined Electra models with five speed gearbox.

Because of the engine and gearbox, the Classic models are basically a 1955 motorcycle that requires a greater level of care and attention than any modern motorcycle. For example, these Bullets needs running in and get noticeably better with time; the gear-change gets smoother, the engine frees off and overall performance improves.

As an owner you will need to keep a check on electrical connections as well as various nuts and bolts for tightness. Valve clearances, drive chain tension, brake and clutch controls all require regular adjustment. To keep the appearance in peak condition the chrome needs to be protected against bad weather,

None of the above is particularly complicated and most Royal Enfield owners enjoy the opportunity to become involved with their machines. This is a classic bike and cannot be ridden between services with no extra attention.

The new Electra and its variants are developments of the original machines but with the new engine and gearbox and other features which provide real improvements in usability and inherent reliability.
